ABOUT "THE CREEPS: A DEEP DARK FEARS COLLECTION"

A follow-up to the New York Times best-selling Deep Dark Fears: a second volume of comics based on people's quirky, spooky, hilarious, and terrifying fears.

Illustrator, animator, teacher, and comic artist Fran Krause has touched a collective nerve with his wildly popular web comic series--and subsequent New York Times best-selling book--Deep Dark Fears. Here he brings readers more of the creepy, funny, and idiosyncratic fears they love illustrated in comic form--such as the fear that your pets will tell other animals all your embarrassing secrets, or that someone uses your house while you're not home--as well as two longer comic short-stories about ghosts.

QUOTES

Is there anything better than spooky tales told by a deceptively warm and friendly host? Fran Krause’s charming illustrations are a small comfort from the shock of seeing flesh roll up like a window shade, dismemberment, decapitation, and beasts appearing in the dark. Prepare to shudder and cringe and pick up some delicious new phobias.
 – Lisa Hannawalt, author of Hot Dog Taste Test and designer of Bojack Horseman

“An homage to that little voice in all of our heads, Fran Krause's The Creeps finds so much fun in the irrational neuroses that fill the blank spaces between our more “useful" thoughts. Sometimes gory, sometimes creepy, and sometimes poetic, this little treat of a book does what great books do best: it allows me to feel a part of a greater world… A world full of people who worry about the same weird stuff that I do”
 – Patrick Osbourne, Academy-Award-winning director of Feast and the forthcoming Nimona feature film

THE CREEPS is a wonderful collection of all the irrational fears that our brains conjure up rather convincingly late at night. Fran Krause brings these to life in his comics with the lightest of touches; drawings of mysteriously drowning or being mistaken for bread by birds and pecked to death are as endearing as those about hiding in the bed from monsters, and ghosts moving into your room and making it their own if you're away for too long. I couldn't stop myself giggling at the drawing of a muscle on the back of a leg rolling up 'like a windowshade' after accidentally nicking it with a razor, and this unexpected laughter at the truly gruesome and weird is what makes THE CREEPS so special. It left me smiling, and ever so casually looking over my shoulder just in case anyone or anything else wanted to have a look.”
 – Ruby Elliot, author of It's All Absolutely Fine and creator of the Tumblr "Rubyetc"

QUOTES

“The great thing about Deep Dark Fears is that you’ll find that you’re not the only one with arguably irrational fears; the downside is you’ll discover way more to be afraid of."
 – Liz Prince, author of Tomboy and Will You Still Love Me If I Wet the Bed?

"Fran Krause’s book confirms your worst fears, reminds you of fears you forgot you had, and gives you lots of new ones about things you hadn't even thought of yet. You would think that illustrating fears so beautifully would take the edge off of them, but it turns out that's not true. They are still deeply terrifying and great."
– Jon Klassen, author and illustrator of I Want My Hat Back and This Is Not My Hat

“My deep dark fear, as I read this book, was that that on the very next page I'd see my own personal fear, vividly illustrated—I had a knot in my stomach, bracing myself for it! When I got to the end and didn't see it, I grew a whole new fear! Does no one share my deep dark fear? Fran Krause has tapped into the impossible space between you and the worst thing that could happen. Whatever lives in there deserves some company! Isn't it comforting to know there are things you never even thought to be afraid of? Well... you'll think to be afraid of them now.”
 – Rebecca Sugar, creator of Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe

Deep Dark Fears is a terrifying and funny treasury of secret, irrational fears we obsess over but are too embarrassed to admit. I can't imagine reading this book home alone at night without completely scaring myself to death.”
– Yumi Sakugawa, author of Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One with the Universe
